Pencil pleat is the most common heading used on curtains as it is so universal, and the most frequently used on sheers to enable them to go on to a curtain track or pole. Pencil Pleat curtain heading typically comes in 1", 2" or 3" depths, and each inch of depth usually corresponds to the number of hook positions available. This means that 3" tape has 3 vertical hook positions, which means you can adjust the exact height of the curtains, either to clear the floor or window sill or hide the curtain track they are hooked on to. Alternative headings such as Eyelets can only be used on a pole, whereas pencil pleat heading can go on any type of fixing.
Don't forget to knot the strings at the ends before pulling them to create the gather!
Our 2” Pencil Pleat Tape measures two inches deep and has two rows of pockets where you can position the curtain hooks, to adjust the overall length. 2” tape also includes clear loops to allow a rod (1.9cm diameter) to be threaded through. 2” Pencil Pleat Tape is translucent and can be used on either a net rod, curtain track or a pole with rings.
Our 3” Pencil Pleat Tape measures three inches deep and has four rows of pockets where you can position the curtain hooks, to adjust the overall length. 3” tape is white and can only be used on a track or a pole with rings.
When quoting or placing an order for pencil pleat tape we need to know the following information:
Rod, Track or Pole width
Recommended fullness: 2.5x
If you are undecided if you require a 2” or 3” tape, we recommend if your drop is over 150cm and your hanging the sheers on a track or a pole then select 3” pencil pleat tape as the heading is deeper it will work best on longer sheers.
Both tapes will be sewn only a couple of millimetres from the top of the curtain, this can be changed should you wish to have a stand up. You will need to consider the overall drop, when adding a stand-up, as this will change the curtain length.
When measuring your length for Pencil Pleat sheers we recommend installing your track/pole first and measuring from where you want the curtain to start to where you want the curtain to finish. You may wish to hide the track/pole in this case you will need to measure above the track/pole to where you want the curtain to fall. If you have a nice track/pole you wish to show, then measure from the centre of the glider to where you want the curtain to fall this way you are getting the most accurate measurement.
