How to Measure Your Windows For Roller Blinds

Measuring your window for roller blinds is a simple process. Follow these steps to ensure you get the correct measurements:

Gather your tools: Grab a metal measuring tape, a notepad, and a pen or pencil to jot down your measurements.

Before you start measuring you need to decide whether you want an inside mount for your blinds (inside the window recess) or an outside mount for your blinds (covering the entire window frame). This will determine where you take your measurements.

How to measure for inside the window recess

Measure the width: Measure the width of the window recess from left to right at the top, middle, and bottom. Note down the smallest measurement.

Measure the height: Measure the height from the top of the recess to the window sill at the left, centre, and right side. Again, record the smallest measurement.

The blind mechanism measures 5cm in depth so we recommend you check that your recess is deep enough to fit the blind and mechanism. Also bearing in mind obstructions such as handles on windows.

How to measure for outside the window recess

Width measurement: Measure the width you want the blind to cover from the outer left edge of the frame to the outer right edge. Add some extra width if you want the blinds to extend beyond the window frame for better light control or privacy.

Height measurement: Measure the height from the top of the frame to the desired endpoint. Include any additional length you want for better coverage.

To minimise light leakage, we recommend that the blind overlaps the window recess by at least 7cm at the top and 5cm each side and to a maximum of 10cm for the best fit.

The overlap at the bottom is a matter of personal choice. Take into account obstacles such as radiators and window edges. If the window ledge protrudes, we suggest that the blind sits just on the sill.

Tips when measuring for roller blinds

We recommend you position your blind outside the recess if the window is not level to avoid the blind catching or hanging incorrectly. Another reason for having the blind on the outside would be if your window opens inwards. If more than one blind is being fitted to a window (for example in a bay window) please measure and order the blind size, you require for each window as this may vary.

In order to supply the correct chain length to adhere to health and safety regulations (BS EN 13120:2009+A1:2014) we will need to know the installation height and blind drop. The installation height is the measurement from where the top of the blind will sit to the floor.

Operating Chains Regulations:

• The bottom loop of the chain must be at least 150cm above the floor.

• The chain loop must be secured to the wall using the safety clips provided.

• The appropriate safety labels must remain attached to both the chain loop and safety clip on purchase.
