Fire Retardant Curtains: Essential Protection for Your Business Spaces
Imagine this: you’re walking through a stylish hotel lobby or a buzzing restaurant, the sunlight catching the curtains just right, and everything feels perfect. Now, imagine a small spark occurs somewhere nearby. Scary thought, right? This is exactly why fire retardant curtains are more than just a nice-to-have – they’re an essential layer of protection for any business space.
Whether you manage a hotel, a trendy café, a theatre, or a modern office, fire safety isn’t optional. But that doesn’t mean you have to compromise on style. With fire retardant voiles and curtains, you can have both elegance and peace of mind.
Why Should Your Business Opt for Fire Retardant Curtains?
Fire retardant curtains do more than look good – they protect your people, your property, and your reputation. Here’s why:
- Reduce Fire Spread: These curtains are designed to resist ignition, slowing down flames and giving everyone extra time to evacuate safely.
- Minimise Damage: Less fire spread means less damage to your venue, saving on costly repairs.
- Lower Toxic Fume Risk: Some fabrics release harmful fumes when burning. Fire retardant curtains are engineered to emit fewer toxic gases.
Think of them as a silent bodyguard for your windows – always watching, never in the way.
Where Fire Retardant Curtains Shine in Business Spaces
Certain environments simply benefit more from fire retardant curtains. Here’s a quick rundown:
| Venue Type | Why Fire Retardant Curtains Help |
|---|---|
| Hotels | Protect guests and meet safety regulations without sacrificing luxury aesthetics. |
| Restaurants & Cafés | Enhance fire safety in public dining areas while maintaining a polished environment. |
| Theatres & Event Spaces | Comply with strict fire codes and protect audiences from accidental sparks. |
| Offices & Co-working Spaces | Safeguard employees while maintaining a polished, professional environment. Also ideal for dividing spaces and improving sound absorption. |
| Public Venues | Schools, hospitals, and community centres benefit from added safety measures. |

UK Fire Safety Compliance Made Simple
Here’s the important bit: your curtains must comply with British Standards for commercial use. Here is a guide to help making a choice easy:
FR – simply means the fabric is Fire Retardant, normally as a result of adding a coating to the fabric after production. Fire Retardant fabrics can usually be washed up to 5 times before they lose their retardant qualities.
IFR – indicates Inherently Fire Retardant fabrics. This means the yarn has been created to be fire retardant, instead of a fabric being coated after production. These fabrics stay fire retardant for many more washes.
BS5867 Pt 2 Type B – is the first of 2 classes of fire retardant fabric that meet British standards for commercial environments. Type B fabrics are suitable for public buildings and offices. The standard specifies how a fabric burns to minimise how a fire spreads in a building.
BS5867 Pt Type C – is the second higher class of fire retardant fabric for British standards. It’s required for hospitals and schools.
IMO Res A 563 (14) – is an international fire retardancy standard that applies to any maritime vessel, where a very high level is needed when specifying fire retardant fabrics.
What do you need?
Public buildings, including hotels and offices need fabrics that meet BS5867 Pt 2 Type B as a minimum
Schools and Hospitals need fabrics that meet BS5867 Pt 2 Type C
Boats and Cruise Ships need fabrics that meet IMO Res A 563 (14)
Following these standards ensures your business meets UK regulations, protects your guests, and avoids potential legal or insurance issues.
Installation and Maintenance Tips
Even the best curtains won’t work if they’re not installed correctly. Here’s what to keep in mind:
- Regular Maintenance: Follow cleaning instructions carefully. Many fire retardant fabrics are washable, but harsh chemicals or bleach may affect their protective qualities.
- Routine Checks: Over time, fabrics can degrade. Inspect curtains periodically to ensure they maintain their fire-resistant properties.
Style and Design Considerations
Fire safety doesn’t mean dull and drab. Modern fire retardant curtains come in a variety of:
- Colours: From soft neutrals to bold statement hues.
- Patterns: Subtle textures, geometric prints, or classic stripes.
- Styles: Net curtains, blackout, pleated, or flowing drapes. We also offer extra long drops on limited fabrics
By choosing fire retardant curtains that complement your interiors, you’re keeping your brand aesthetic intact while ticking off essential safety boxes.
Pro tip: Pairing light, airy voile curtains with heavier drapes can give you both style and function, especially in hospitality spaces.
