Measuring for Roman blinds is easier than you might think. Follow our simple measuring guide below and we will do the rest. Blinds can be fitted either inside the recess or outside the recess. Ensure that you think about whether the blind is to be fixed to the outside of the window or into the window recess, as this will affect both the width and the drop of the blind.
Fitting inside the recess
Measure the full width and height of the recess and we will make the appropriate deductions to ensure a perfect fit. We will deduct approx. 5mm from the width and drop to ensure your blind fits perfectly. Measure in 3 places for both the width and the drop. Submit the smallest of the 3 sizes.
Make note of any protrusions such as tiles and wooden rails and take the smallest width to ensure the blind will close without catching.
Check that your recess is deep enough to fit the blind into.
Fitting outside the recess
Measure the full width and height of the recess and add extra to the top and to each side for the width. We will make the blind to the size specified on the order with no deductions.
To minimise light leakage, we recommend that the blind overlaps the window recess by at least 7cm at the top and 5cm each side and to a maximum of 10cm for the best fit.
The overlap at the bottom is a matter of personal choice. Consider obstacles such as radiators and window edges. If the window ledge protrudes, we suggest that the blind sits just on the sill.
Top Tip: We recommend you position your blind outside the recess if the window is not straight to avoid the blind catching or hanging incorrectly. Another reason for having the blind on the outside would be if your window opens inwards. If more than one blind is being fitted to a window (for example in a bay window) please order the blind size required for each window as this may vary.
Our Roman blind track is a fully enclosed system with a sidewinder mechanism. A pulley chain is used to operate the blind. The blind is attached to a Roman blind track using Velcro, with appropriate fixing screws that can be either top fitting or face fitting. Installation instructions are supplied with each order.
Select either right hand or left-hand control position for the chain (if no selection is given a standard right-hand control will be installed). To supply the correct chain length to adhere to Health and Safety Regulation (BS EN 13120:2009+A1:2014) please supply the * Installation height Measurement from the top of the blind to the floor.
Operating Chains regulations
• The bottom loop of the chain must be at least 150cm above the floor.
• The chain loop must be secured using the retainer supplied. This should be securely fastened to the wall.
• The appropriate safety labels must remain attached to both chain loop and retainer on purchase.
All Roman blinds are lined with sateen twill poly/cotton lining.
All sizes are approximate. Please supply all measurements in cm to the nearest whole cm. We work to an acceptable commercial tolerance of 1cm on our Roman blinds. Our fabrics may vary in width from 127cm to 140cm. When ordering a blind larger than the full fabric width, we will manufacture your blind with an even join at each end pattern matched as standard.
Roman blinds ordered to fit outside the recess will be manufactured to the given width and drop.
Blinds ordered to fit inside the recess will have 5mm deducted from the width and the drop.
All Roman blinds are fully lined and are supplied complete with a track and brackets ready for hanging. Cords at the back are fitted with breakaway clips in line with Health and Safety Regulations. Pull chains come with safety clips which must be fitted to the wall.
